And Alt Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to creating sustainable livelihoods and fostering the holistic empowerment of individuals with disabilities.

We envision spaces where people with disabilities in low resource regions have the opportunities to build friendships, make decisions for themselves, explore their interests, live a life of joy and earn a living.

The Path

Through advocacy and awareness at different levels - family, neighbourhood and government bodies, we create community centres where art, craft and vocation are the means towards meaningful participation in everyday life. We identify unique skill sets in people with disabilities and through rigorous training, we build potential to create marketable products and services.

What goes into making 70 beautiful gift bags? A whole lot of time, thought, and teamwork.

Over the past few weeks, our team poured their hearts into crafting each piece. We hand-printed fabrics and neatly stitched foldover bags accompanied with handwritten notes that carried warmth, for guests at a lovely wedding.

The soaps inside were sourced from the inspiring folks at @timbaktu.collective and the fabric? All hand-dyed and printed by our units at Karur, Tamilnadu.

This wire koodai from @and.alt.foundation has my heart. This koodai has a special memory associated with it. I have seen my paternal grandmother in my village in Karnataka use it. It was really a bag for EVERYTHING. You want to go grocery shopping? Take the koodai. You want to carry some fresh picks from the farm? Take the koodai. You want to send across a dabba of fresh home made jackfruit chips to your cousin? Send it in the koodai with the local mailman. After I grew up, I have barely seen this in use in the city. When I saw this being made by the beautiful community at @and.alt.foundation I knew I had to bring back this memory.

Earlier this year, we held a special embroidery workshop with an incredible group of mothers of young children with multiple disabilities and adults with locomotor disabilities. Hosted by the talented mother-daughter duo @thaiyal.by.aa this workshop took place at the Kavalkaranpatti Village Community Hall. 🌸 These dedicated mothers, also full-time caregivers, are learning valuable skills that support them in earning an income—one stitch at a time. 💪🧶

Our eco-printing adventure started with marigolds and @yakshi_kalai in February 2022, and since then, we've been experimenting with a diverse array of local leaves, flowers, and roots.

This process has become a meditative practice. We’ve learned to follow weather patterns and rain cycles, to time our prints perfectly, all the while hoping for a sprinkle of magic to grace our work.

It was a very rainy day and a holiday for our unit members. Most of them walk a few kilometres or hop a couple of buses to reach the unit and the rains make it an obstacle course. Independent travel was once unimaginable for many, but opportunity, persistent effort and enabling support systems have unlocked their capabilities.

Coming back to the video. There's Punitha, our new unit manager unwrapping prints from the day before. She just took over from Thangamani after a slow and planned transition. Finding staff to run the work on the ground is always challenging - someone who understands the population we work with, has the urge to learn and keep trying and the energy to train and mentor a unit of many very unique individuals.

We found Punitha at one of the early intervention centres run by @odatrichy and @vidyasagar.ngo where her child with a motor delay was availing services from. With a personal understanding of impairment and seeing the wonders that timely rehabilitation can do, she has been very motivated to get trained and take on this role.

The magic prints that nature makes keeps us inspired to learn more and keep getting better at what we do.

Getting these laptop sleeves out for a custom order was exciting for us!
We got to use some of our pretty prints from Karur and stitch it with the wonderful women of Sura in Cuddalore. @sura.kanavu is a rural enterprise aimed at creating purposeful and sustainable livelihoods for women in rural India towards expanding their life choices.

Karur where we work is part of the Cauvery Delta region and primarily agrarian. A wide range of grains, pulses, seeds, vegetables and garland flowers are grown in the region’s red soil. Over the last two decades, it has been transforming into a massive textile hub and through Tamil Nadu Papers Limited, as one of the largest producer of paper from sugarcane waste in Asia.

Hoping that we’ll always strive to meet the balance between it all!

We are so excited to share that 25 people with disabilities on our team from Thogamalai, TN experienced their first ever live match in an actual stadium at the Salem cricket ground.

We had children and adults from remote villages like Muthalaipatti, Thalunji, Pillur, Kalladai, Neithalur, pillaikondangipatti take a trip to witness professional cricket in action.

Sport sure has the capacity to embrace diversity.

A big thanks to @abhinavmukund @tnpremierleague for making this dream come true.

Eco-printing is a technique where plants, leaves and flowers leave their shapes, color, and marks on fabric. Plant material bundled inside of cloth is steamed or boiled to release the dye found naturally inside the plant, creating a contact print in the shape of the leaf or flower used. These contact prints are referred to as “eco-prints.”

At @and.alt.foundation in collaboration with @yakshi_kalai we train our adults with disabilities to learn to collect, arrange and work with each other to make some beautiful, one of a kind fabrics. These therapeutic techniques help our community to indulge in art and also provides opportunity to practice sustainability and design thinking inculcating self confidence.
